Rohde & Schwarz – Urban Planning and Design Competition Exhibition, Munich Campus Expansion

With the planned expansion of its Munich headquarters, Rohde & Schwarz is making a strong commitment to Munich as a business location. As part of an urban planning and landscape design competition, eleven international teams of architects and landscape architects developed concepts for a new building complex featuring a high-rise tower, research and development facilities, and publicly accessible spaces.

The invited competition participants included allmannwappner with Schüller Landschaftsarchitekten, Barkow Leibinger with capattistaubach, C.F. Møller Architects, Cobe, HENN with Uniola Landschaftsarchitektur | Stadtplanung, JSWD Architekten with RMP Stephan Lenzen Landschaftsarchitekt, LAN Associates + Kuehn Malvezzi with Michel Desvigne Paysagiste, Meixner Schlüter Wendt with KUBUS Group, Snøhetta, UNStudio with NUWELA – Büro für Städtebau und Landschaftsarchitektur, and 3XN/GXN with Kortemeier Brokmann Landschaftsarchitekten.

plan A was commissioned to develop and deliver the accompanying exhibition and supported Rohde & Schwarz in communicating the competition process. The objective was to make the complex planning process accessible and understandable to a broad audience while presenting the submitted designs in a clear and informative exhibition format.

The public exhibition showcased all competition entries and provided visitors with the opportunity to explore the urban, architectural, and landscape design qualities of the proposals. The project also attracted significant public attention and was featured in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany’s leading daily newspapers.

The exhibition programme was complemented by a public panel discussion featuring Stephan Georg Kahl Gustafsson (R&S Immobilienmanagement GmbH), Lars Klatte (RKW Architektur +, Chair of the Jury), Patrick Lüth (Snøhetta), and Michael Bacherl (City of Munich). Moderated by Nadin Heinich, the discussion brought together perspectives from the client, architecture, and urban planning.

The competition was won by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, whose design is set to become a new landmark within the Rohde & Schwarz campus in Munich’s Werksviertel district.

“With this striking building complex, Rohde & Schwarz will create a visible landmark within Munich’s urban landscape, reflecting the company’s importance as a major employer in the region.”
