Munich and BMW have been closely connected for more than 100 years. Few industries are as emblematic of Germany’s economic success – and few are currently undergoing such fundamental change. Electrification, AI, and autonomous driving are transforming not only the car itself, but also the city. What does this mean for roads, parking, logistics, and public space? Are we perhaps still planning our cities around a car that may soon no longer exist in its current form?
JOHANNES BETZ is Professor of Autonomous Vehicle Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His work spans AI, robotics, philosophy, and the racetrack. He studied automotive engineering as well as philosophy of science and technology and founded the TUM Autonomous Motorsport Team, which has won autonomous racing competitions in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi.
