Interactive Future

More Participation or More Heteronomy through "Intelligent" Architecture? . Academy of the Arts . Berlin . 07.12.2009 . with Carole Collet, Wilfried Kuehn, Joachim Sauter

What impact do new (communication) technologies have on architecture? In this context, words like “interactive spaces” or “intelligent architectures” are often mentioned. What does “interactive” mean exactly? Nothing more than gadgets? Or also new opportunities giving people a greater ability to shape their environment in the future? The discussion in the Academy of Arts probes into this compelling field.

Joachim Sauter is co-founder of ART+COM, studio for new media. ART+COM uses interactive media to translate and stage complex issues through interactive media in space, making them tangible, for example, in the form of exhibitions, art installations, or set designs. The London textile designer Carole Collet explores how new technologies can be integrated into textiles to create poetic and atmospheric spaces—design for “future homes” without technology aesthetics. Wilfried Kuehn, however, pursues a very different approach. His (exhibition) architectures are not influenced by media presentations, but by clear geometries, physicality, and a deliberately structured spatial sequence.
