Architecture as
communication generator
Academy of the Arts . Berlin . 03.06.2009 . with Tim Edler, Jürgen Mayer H., Ilka Ruby
Jan and Tim Edler—realities:united—work at the interface of architecture, art, and communication and were recently awarded the Förderung Prize for architecture by the Academy of Arts. In their work, built architecture and new communication technologies meet. Thus, realities:united not only respond to a constantly changing social environment, but redefine the scope and potential impact of architecture. Their projects act as catalysts that expand a building’s modes of expression: through the connection with technology, architecture becomes a “communication generator.”
realities:unlimited rose to prominence with façade installations such at BIX for the Graz Art Museum and SPOTS at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Currently, they realize projects worldwide—for example, in Singapore, Cordoba, Spain, or Toronto, Canada. Specifically, they are exploring an “aesthetics of behavior” of media surfaces by experimenting with basic (architectural) parameters such as scale, resolution, or spatial depth. The focus of the evening are questions such as: How can media façades be more than a mega display, which is arbitrarily glued to a building? What sort of communications—beyond advertising—could a building even send in urban space? And what role does the staging of architecture in public space play in this?
